Event Details

The fifth in Redeye’s series of photographic walks in Manchester, Fresh Eyes 5 is with photographer and architectural expert Mark Watson again, this time examining the development of Ancoats and the architecture of early Georgian cotton mills in Manchester.

In 1835 Manchester was the first and greatest industrial city in the world - a place where seemingly limitless possibilities sat side by side with squalor and poverty. Today it requires a little knowledge and observation to understand - and photograph – Georgian and Victorian aspects of Manchester. We're delighted to have Mark Watson, architectural photographer and walking encyclopedia on Georgian and Victorian Manchester, to show you the landmarks and gems of the city, and describe their place in history.

This event is aimed at anyone with an interest in history and photography, amateur or professional, who finds the subject interesting and would like to explore it some more (there will not be much technical information about photography). Bring your own camera, compact or SLR, some good shoes and an umbrella - the walk will go ahead even in the microscopically small chance that it's raining. We’d advise you not to bring a tripod as there might not be enough time and space to use this and you’ll end up carrying this around all day.

Meet at the Chinese Arts Centre, Market Buildings, Thomas Street, Manchester, M4 1EU. Mark will give a brief introduction of the evening at 18:00 before the walk starts. The walk goes on until approximately 21.30 and will finish at a traditional Ancoats pub.
